The final of the 2022 season of the UEFA Champions League will be held at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Russia. Russia, which will host the final of the Champions League this season, the most prestigious club football competition in Europe, must have already completed its preparations and started to count down for the historic day.
The UEFA Champions League final in 2022 will determine the Champions League champion of the 2021-2022 season. It will be the 67th season of Europe's elite club tournament in total and the 30th since it has been renamed the UEFA Champions League. First, it was announced that the final was to be held at the Allianz Arena, at the stadium of the Bayern Munich in Munich, in May 2022, but later it was relocated to Saint Petersburg Stadium due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected the whole world.
The organization, which was originally planned to be held at Atatürk Olympic Stadium last season in İstanbul, was taken from Turkey due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, Turkey will be preparing to host the final in 2023, which also marks the centenary of the Republic of Turkey’s foundation.
The organization started in 1955 as European Champion Clubs Cup and with a double-legged elimination system. During this period, only the teams that had completed their top-level domestic league as champions in the previous season could participate in the tournament. With the 1991-92 season, the format changed and the group stage, organized in round-robin style, was added to the cup. With the 1992-93 season, the organization was rebranded and took on its current name. With the 1996-97 season, some clubs that finish the national league behind the champion have also become eligible to participate in the tournament, based on their UEFA country coefficient. Today, a maximum of five teams per country can compete in a season. The teams that rank below the teams that qualify for the Champions League can participate in the UEFA Europa League, the second tier of the Champions League.
So far, 22 teams from 10 different countries have won the Champions League. Apart from these, 12 teams won the tournament more than one time. While Spain is the most successful country in the history of the tournament with a total of 18 titles, Real Madrid has the most victories with 13 championships. Real Madrid also has the longest championship streak by winning the first five seasons of the cup in a row.
